Now an Independent Non-Profit Industry Consortium, the Metaverse Standards Forum

The Metaverse Standards ForumTM declares that it has been incorporated as a stand-alone non-profit industry consortium, less than a year after its first debut. The objective of the Forum remains the same: to facilitate, encourage, and promote cooperation and coordination concerning interoperability relating to the metaverse amongst standards organizations, businesses, and academic institutions.

The Khronos® Group launched and organized the Forum in June 2022. The Metaverse Standards Forum has set up its own governance, financing, and operations today with over 2,400 members and numerous active Working and Exploratory Groups aimed at advancing practical interoperability. Working Group activities continue to be open to all members, while new paid membership categories allow members to support Forum projects while also being elected to leadership positions in the Forum.

“Interoperability is the key to the metaverse scaling to its full potential beyond siloed games, experiences, and worlds,” says Neil Trevett, president of the Khronos Group and the first president of the Metaverse Standards Forum. “The unprecedented level of participation in the Forum demonstrates strong industry interest in the broad cooperation necessary to bring that vision to life.”

The Forum doesn’t create standards on its own; instead, it works to promote participation, create cooperative consensus and insights, and increase the exposure of any industry activity aiming to make the metaverse more interoperable. We cordially urge all interested organizations to take part in the Forum, which is now wholly independent.

The Forum Keeps an Exploratory and Working Groups Pipeline Driven by Members

With 37 original members at its inception, the Metaverse Standards Forum has expanded to include a number of standards bodies, businesses, industry consortia, platform vendors, hardware manufacturers, and end-user organizations. In order to address the potential and difficulties related to metaverse interoperability across many disciplines that the Forum membership has prioritized, the Forum maintains a member-driven Exploratory and Working Group pipeline.

Participation imposes no responsibilities for obtaining patent licenses because the Forum does not produce standards. Meetings of the Forum Working Groups are open to all Members, and all activities and deliverables of the Forum are non-confidential.

Working Groups in Forums

Working groups within the forum are governed by charters developed by members, which specify practical short-term projects with a focus on producing interoperability criteria and testing outcomes to help member organizations advance their objectives.

The initial Working Groups consist of:

The charters for future Working Groups are also being developed by a number of Forum Exploratory Groups, including those focused on 3D web interoperability, interoperable avatars and characters, digital clothing and wearables, metaverse network requirements, end-user troubleshooting, and metaverse privacy, cybersecurity, and identity. Any Forum member is eligible to suggest, join, or run for leadership of a domain Working Group.

New Members May Immediately Become Participants or Principal Members of the Organization.

The membership structure of the Metaverse Standards Forum will change over the next months as it develops into a newly independent non-profit organization. For a transitional period, current members will be granted continued membership benefits. New members may immediately become Participants or Principal members of the organization.
